South Falls Framed By Autumn Colors

Yesterday morning I went up the hill to Silver Falls State Park, where the fall colors are out in all their glory. I’ve photographed the South Falls a number of times, even before I became an amateur photographer. My goal for the morning was to spend a couple hours there trying out new compositions.

South Falls can be so grand. It’s a powerful waterfall when the flow is really going, and it’s on display as the centerpiece of the park’s day use area. What I like about the composition above is that it is more intimate; South Falls, rather than being depicted as a grand showpiece (though I took plenty of those shots too), is instead framed—and almost nestled—within its natural context.

My hope is to go back this morning for a hike with the family and to photograph a couple of the other falls. But we’ll see: the weather forecast is now calling for heavy rain and high winds.
